Societal XR, as the central research vision for the XR/Games Lab at Offenburg University, is naturally also addressed in teaching and in student projects and theses. One of the best student works to emerge from this in the last two and a half years is the concept developed by Rommy Lang. She has developed a Societal XR concept for the digital enhancement of monuments in public spaces. The following illustrations show a sketch and an AI-generated representation of how a monument—in this case, the equestrian statue or Prince Eugene equestrian monument in Vienna—could be enhanced with Societal XR.

Rommy Lang’s work also marks the start of the new “Virtual Worlds & Games” (VIW) series, which will frequently publish student work and projects over the coming years. In addition, the series will also report on research projects, scientific conferences, and important events related to Societal XR, the XR/Games Lab, and the “Virtual Worlds & Game Technologies” Bachelor degree program at Offenburg University.
